The Florida Keys
are a chain of islands located off the southern coast of Florida. The island chain stretches 113 miles, starting in Key Largo and ending in Key West and consists of 44 individual islands connected by 42 bridges.
They are called "keys"
because they are formed from ancient coral reefs that have built up over thousands of years. The word "key" comes from the Spanish word “Cayo," which means “Small Island." Therefore, the name "Florida Keys" refers to the string of small islands that make up this unique archipelago.
